Lung cancer is the world’s leading cause of cancer deaths, and is largely preventable

Lung cancer is responsible for 1 in 5 cancer deaths and largely preventable.1,2 Biopsy diagnostic yield using current standards of care varies from 46% to 88% in advanced bronchoscope techniques, and complications due to lung biopsies are associated with morbidity risk.3,4

Cellvizio® needle-based Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (nCLE) solutions for interventional pulmonology applications

Cellvizio® needle-based Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (nCLE) has been used for many years with great success for the visualization of Pancreatic Cystic Lesions.9,10 Used through a 19-gauge needle, nCLE offers unique microscopic views of the inner wall of pancreatic cysts, enabling physicians to characterize these important lesions with much higher accuracy.9,10

Over the past few years, the team of Prof. dr. Jouke Annema, at the University Medical Center in Amsterdam, has used Cellvizio® nCLE solutions to image inside pulmonary lesions, through a 19-gauge needle, passed through the working channel of a bronchoscope.

While navigation systems may position the bronchoscope in the vicinity of the peripheral nodule, because the nodule is outside the airways in 80% of cases11, the operator cannot directly visualize the nodule with the bronchoscope and needs to use a needle to go through the airways.

The use of Cellvizio® nCLE may help physicians better target biopsies in the lung5-7, and enables real-time visualization and staging from inside lung nodules and lymph nodes.8

Cellvizio® captures in vivo images in real-time, providing clinical information, and may provide in situ guidance for targeted biopsy. The result is the ability to characterize lung lesions, differentiating benign vs. malignant.5-8 In a recently published study, physicians using Cellvizio® could diagnose and stage lung nodules with 90% accuracy8, leading to better informed patient management.
